Maggid: The 10 Plagues

Before you complete the challenge, read the text below. This is the way.

אין הקדוש ברוך הוא שמח במפלתן של רשעים באותה שעה בקשו מלאכי השרת לומר שירה לפני הקב"ה אמר להן הקב"ה מעשה ידי טובעין בים ואתם אומרים שירה לפני

The Holy Blessed One is not gladdened by the downfall of the wicked. At the time (of the exodus from Egypt), the highest angels wanted to sing a song before the Holy Blessed One. But the Holy Blessed one said to them: “My children are drowning in the sea, and you are singing a song before me?!”
- Babylonian Talmud Sanhedrin 39b

Judaism is a tradition which values the sanctity of life above virtually all other considerations. We’re asked to be continually aware of how our actions and non-actions impact the ability of ourselves and others to live with health and vibrancy. The custom emerged among medieval Jewish communities to spill a drop of wine for each of the ten plagues, as a way of symbolizing our own pain at the plagues’ necessity for our freedom - sympathy even for our enemy’s pain.

Activity: Natural Consequences

Where in your life might there be side-effects or unintended consequences from things that you are otherwise grateful for? Think: carbon emissions, food waste, unethical business practices, etc.

Set a timer for 60 seconds. In that time, put together a list of up to ten of these contemporary plagues that afflict our world as a result of our own desires.

Collect 2 points for each contemporary plague you come up with.

If you have enough time to add examples for the plagues you came up with, you can collect 2 additional points per example.
