Maggid: The 4 Children

Before you complete the challenge, read the text below. This is the way.

בכל דור ודור חייב אדם לראות את עצמו כאילוהוא יצא ממצרים

In every generation, a person is obligated to see themself as though they went out of Egypt.

- From Mishnah Pesachim 10:5 (2nd Century CE Jewish legal text)

בכל דור ודור חייב אדם להראות את עצמו כאילוהוא יצא ממצרים

In every generation, a person is obligated to show themself as though they went out of Egypt.

- Maimonides’ interpretation of the teaching from the Mishnah (From 12th Century Spain & North Africa)

1,000 years after the original teaching (“see yourself”) which seems to reflect an internal experience, the famous and hugely influential rabbi/doctor/astrologist/astronomer Maimonides makes a subtle change (“show yourself”). This requires us to do more active, external work in thinking about how our identities impact our sense of purpose in the world. He prompts us to think about how we can’t walk the road to liberation without each other and the fullness of our very selves.

Activity: Pictionary

Draw a picture (no words allowed!) of one of the four aspects of your personality:

  1. A part that you’re proud of

  2. A part that you’re working on changing

  3. A part that other people have told you is true about yourself

  4. A part of yourself that you admire in others as well

Set a timer for 1 minute and play a game of Pictionary to see if others at your seder can figure out what the picture represents!

Collect 4 points for drawing the picture and playing Pictionary. If you’re playing in a team of 2 or more, select one person to draw.

An additional 4 points goes to the person or team that guesses correctly! If you’re playing in teams, your teammate is allowed to guess!

If you choose to stay in Maggid on your next turn, you may repeat this activity, using a different prompt (above) for a chance to collect more points.

Note for virtual game play: To ensure that everyone tuning in on a computer screen can see your drawing at it’s full size, we recommend either of the following options:

  1. Have the person at the ‘head of the table’ stop sharing their screen and spotlight the illustrator. This way they can hold their picture to the camera, and other participants have the best view possible.

  2. If the illustrator would rather draw digitally, you can use the whiteboard function in Zoom. Have the person at the ‘head of the table’ stop sharing their screen. Then the illustrator can share their screen instead, and select the whiteboard option to draw their Pictionary image.
